Alphonse Elric closed the fridge in a huff. "Brother?"
"Yeah?" Edward Elric asked from his seat at the table, reading the newspaper and taking a sip of his coffee. He had developed a real taste for coffee lately. He didn't know why.
"We don't have any more of those muffins left. I thought you said you bought some more." Al had a habit of scolding his brother, despite their obvious age difference.
"I did. You're just not looking hard enough," Ed said, without looking up from the newspaper.
Al checked again. Nothing.
"I checked at least seven times, Brother. Still nothing."
"Are you looking in the fridge?"
"Yes," Al said, quite agitated at the fact that his brother was still unbelievably lazy, even after all these years.
"The reason you can't find it is because you're not looking in the right place," Ed said, like it was nothing.
"Then where should I be looking?" Al asked, the agitation still going strong.
"The pantry," Ed said, as if it were the most obvious answer in the entir

Many people he knew took things for granted.
Toys.
Food.
Houses.
Limbs.

There had been a time when Edward Elric had took those things for granted as well.
But that was before that night.  That night.  The night when everything went terribly wrong.  Things had actually started going wrong long before that night, ever since he-Edward refused to call him anything else except a few swear words-had left, ever since Ed's mom died.  Ever since then it was as if the world turned upside-down.  For a while there was peace with Teacher, learning alchemy, but that had ended too.  But everything just fell apart then.
He and Al had thought everything out so well.  Why-why had it g
- The Bad DaysThere were the good days. Days when he would laugh, tease Winry, chase Den around the yard, spar on the pretense of checking Al's reflexes and strength. He would pour himself a glass of lemonade and sprawl under a tree, reading until he fell asleep with a contented smile on his face. He would stare at the back of Winry's head with a funny little smile, and Al would dare to think he was happy.
Then there were the bad days.
They always seemed to come right after the days when he seemed the happiest, like he was coming down from a sugar rush. He would be in high spirits at dinner, joking and eating with gusto, then tickle Al just to hear him laugh and rush off to bed, taking the steps two at a time and appearing to be fast asleep by the time Al entered their room. But the next morning, he wouldn't wake up for hours. He would just sleep and sleep and sleep, and sometimes Al would peek in and catch him just lying there, staring at the ceiling or the wall and not showing the slightest

            “Huh? A surprise alchemy assessment?” Ed asked aloud while reading a letter from his superior.
            “What is it brother?” Al asked coming in from the other room, carrying a box to store in the basement.
